US General Proposes Intensified Airstrikes to Cripple Iran’s Missile Capabilities
Amid escalating regional tensions, US Central Command head General Brad Cooper has devised a plan to intensify airstrikes against Iran over the next 10 to 14 days, aiming to disable Iran’s missile launch capabilities. This strategy, reported by The Wall Street Journal, awaits President Joe Biden’s approval following the US response to a surprise attack on bases in Jordan. The plan is intended to reduce Iran’s ability to retaliate, potentially lessening the need for defensive ammunition. However, concerns about missile interceptor shortages have led some US military leaders, including Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, to advocate a more cautious approach. Cooper, operating from Florida, represents a more aggressive stance, initially calling for six weeks of air operations but ultimately agreeing to a ceasefire sooner.
In parallel developments, Saudi Arabia plans to announce an international coalition to protect shipping in the Red Sea after Iranian-backed Houthi forces threatened to block Saudi vessels. Riyadh has invited around 50 countries, including the US, Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, to join the coalition. Coastal nations such as Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia have already agreed to participate. The coalition’s effectiveness hinges on US support, which remains undecided, with European countries awaiting Washington’s position before committing. Saudi Arabia’s urgency stems from the strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait for its oil exports, especially amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Meanwhile, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized Italy’s efforts to pressure Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt settler violence in the West Bank. Speaking ahead of an international conference in Rome promoting a two-state solution, Tajani stated that Italy condemns settler violence against Palestinians despite its friendly ties with Israel.
