Religious Zionist Rabbis Oppose Criminal Enforcement Against Haredi Yeshiva Students

Senior rabbis from the Religious Zionist community have issued a letter condemning criminal enforcement and administrative sanctions against Haredi Torah students. The rabbis, affiliated with the organization "Torat Ha'aretz Ha'tova," strongly reject arrests and punitive measures targeting these students. Their criticism is directed at the position of the State Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, who opposes legislation aimed at freezing or preventing arrests and advocates for harsher criminal penalties on draft evaders.

In their letter, the rabbis argue that coercive measures will backfire, stating, "The rabbis of 'Torat Ha'aretz Ha'tova' completely reject the use of arrests and heavy-handed conduct toward yeshiva students. Such actions deepen the divide and mistrust and do not bring soldiers to the army but only push away the possibility of enlistment." Alongside their protest against arrest policies, the rabbis call on all sectors to calm tensions and condemn the disorder and violence seen in Haredi protests. They emphasize that any violence, including verbal, worsens the crisis and hinders resolving the painful issue.

The letter concludes with a call for respectful and substantive dialogue as the only practical path to a solution. Signatories include prominent rabbis such as Yaakov Ariel, Elyakim Levanon, Yaakov Shapira, David Turgeman, Shmuel Eliyahu, and Zalman Baruch Melamed.
