Israeli Youth Handball Team Falls to Croatia in European Championship Opener
The Israeli youth handball team lost 33-29 to Croatia in their opening match of the European Championship on Wednesday. Despite a strong performance led by coaches Dor Russo and Asaf Siton, the Israeli squad was ultimately overcome by the physically stronger Croatian team in the final minutes. Israel led for 45 minutes and remained resilient until the end, but Croatia secured the win in the decisive moments.
Jonathan Pelech was the standout player for Israel, scoring 14 goals, including a buzzer-beater at halftime. The Israeli team started with a solid defense and maintained a lead throughout the first half, ending it at 17-15. The second half proved more challenging as Croatia adjusted their defense to contain Pelech, and the teams exchanged leads until Croatia pulled ahead at 30-27 in the 57th minute. Israel narrowed the gap to 30-29 but could not equalize.
Other Israeli scorers included Rom Tobis and Geva Dagani with four goals each, Roy Ganel with two, and Tomer Michalis, Ido Malul, and Noam Levi contributing as well. Israel will seek its first victory in the tournament in the next match against the strong Czech team scheduled for Thursday.
