Europe Faces Accelerating Heatwaves with No Thermodynamic Limit, Threatening Public Health and Environment
Europe is currently enduring an unprecedented heatwave affecting nearly 100 million people, with museums closing early and trains slowing due to warped rails. This crisis exposes the continent's lack of preparedness, especially in Western Europe where older buildings lack proper insulation and air conditioning. The underlying cause is a persistent atmospheric phenomenon known as the "Omega block," a stationary high-pressure system that compresses and heats the air, channeling scorching temperatures from North Africa and the Sahara directly into Europe, creating a stagnant "heat dome" that traps pollution and heat.
The greatest health risks arise during "tropical nights," when temperatures remain above 20 degrees Celsius, preventing the human body from cooling down and recovering. This continuous heat stress disrupts sleep and increases vulnerability to heat-related illnesses. Climate models have underestimated both the speed and severity of these extreme heat events, with current conditions resembling scenarios predicted for 10 to 20 years in the future. Contrary to some climate skeptics' claims, scientists have actually downplayed the crisis's intensity.
There is no thermodynamic ceiling limiting future temperature rises; regions like the United Arab Emirates already experience summer highs of 50 degrees Celsius. As greenhouse gas concentrations increase, Europe and the Middle East will continue to face more frequent and intense heatwaves. The heat also dries out vegetation, fueling rapid and devastating wildfires, such as the recent massive blaze near Bordeaux, France. Thunderstorms at the edges of the heat dome can ignite further fires, trapping heavy pollution under the stagnant air and exacerbating health risks for vulnerable populations.
This phenomenon is part of a global warming trend affecting the entire planet, including Israel and the Middle East, where summers are becoming longer, hotter, and more dangerous. The scientific community presents a stark reality, emphasizing the urgent need for societies to prepare for these escalating climate challenges.
