Prime Energy Plans Distributed Data Centers at Dozens of Israeli Gas Stations to Overcome Power Grid Bottlenecks
Prime Energy, an Israeli company specializing in solar energy and electricity storage, is preparing to establish distributed data centers across dozens of gas stations nationwide. The initiative aims to bypass the current bottleneck in connecting large server farms to the power grid by utilizing existing electrical infrastructure at these stations. The first phase targets about 70 gas stations operated by Delek Properties, part of the Delek Group, each hosting 2-3 megawatts of IT capacity, cumulatively reaching approximately 150 megawatts.
This approach leverages pre-existing power connections at the gas stations, avoiding the lengthy wait times for new grid connections that have recently been halted for 140 days by the Israeli Electricity Authority and the grid operator Noga due to a backlog of 27 gigawatts in requests, nearly triple Israel's peak electricity consumption. Prime Energy expects to complete the initial network within one to two years, with plans to expand to an additional 170 stations.
The move responds to soaring demand for computing power driven by the growth of artificial intelligence applications. Globally, data center development faces constraints from limited electricity availability and grid capacity. Prime Energy's model involves managing multiple small-scale data centers as a unified system, known as Distributed Data Centers, which can be deployed faster and closer to end-users compared to traditional large data centers.
Similar strategies are emerging internationally, with companies in the U.S. like SPAN and Sunrun deploying small computing units in existing buildings to mitigate grid connection shortages. Prime Energy highlights its unique advantage in combining energy production, electricity supply licensing, storage capabilities, and widespread infrastructure assets. Yaron Kizoz, Prime Energy's Vice Chairman and Chief Business Officer, described the project as a "strategic growth engine" and a creative solution to current grid limitations, potentially reshaping how energy and computing sectors address power scarcity challenges in Israel.
