Israeli Agro-Voltaic Project Sets National Record with First Grape Harvest
On Mount Gilboa, a groundbreaking Israeli agro-voltaic project recently achieved a national milestone by harvesting 30 tons of grapes grown beneath solar panels. This innovative approach, combining agriculture and solar energy production on the same land, allows the solar panels to provide essential shade that protects the grapes from the region's intense heat, enabling healthy fruit development. The project involved collaboration between the Ma'ale Gilboa kibbutz agricultural cooperative, pre-military preparatory students from the Beit She'an area, and the energy company Doral.
The vines were closely monitored for months to balance agricultural needs with electricity generation. Doral Israel CEO Ofer Satui emphasized that the project aimed to prove that the land could simultaneously produce renewable energy and thriving agriculture. Doral's agro-voltaic professional manager, Oved Yavin, highlighted the challenge of cultivating grapes in such a hot climate, noting that success here suggests potential for other crops.
The Ma'ale Gilboa site has become a vibrant research and development hub for integrating land, food, and energy, with additional crops like lychee, mango, sweet corn, wheat, and potatoes also grown successfully. Kibbutz energy activity chairman Dovi Miller expressed enthusiasm about the project's significance for the future of Israeli agriculture, stressing the importance of linking farming with renewable energy and advanced technologies to attract younger generations.
This first full harvest under solar panels marks a significant achievement and a promising step forward for sustainable agriculture in Israel.
