Israel's U18 Basketball Team Secures Top Spot in European Championship Group

Israel's under-18 basketball team achieved a significant victory on Sunday by defeating France 91-77 in the group stage of the European Championship. Coached by Nadav Zilberstein, the team overcame a tough initial schedule, including a comeback win against Greece, to secure first place in Group A before the final round against Austria on Monday. With a 2-0 record, Israel leads the group, while Greece and France are tied at 1-1, and Austria stands at 0-2. Even if Israel loses to Austria, they will remain first due to their head-to-head results against Greece and France.

This assured top position allows Zilberstein to rest key players in the upcoming match. After a rest day on Tuesday, Israel will face Denmark in the round of 16 on Wednesday. A win there guarantees advancement to the quarterfinals and retention in Division A, while a loss would lead to classification matches to avoid relegation. The top five teams in the tournament, including the four semifinalists and the fifth-place winner from classification games, qualify for the under-19 World Championship. Israel made its debut in that tournament last summer, finishing seventh.

Denmark, Israel's expected opponent, has struggled in their group, losing to Slovakia and Turkey and facing a strong Serbian team next. The quarterfinal opponent will be determined from a pool including Spain, Italy, Latvia, Germany, Slovenia, Lithuania, and Bulgaria. Israel's strong group stage performance sets a positive tone for their pursuit of another world championship qualification.
