Google Messages Lets Users Edit Sent Texts With Several Restrictions

Google has introduced a new feature in its Google Messages app that allows users to edit text messages after sending them. However, this capability comes with several important limitations. To use the feature, both sender and recipient must have RCS (Rich Communication Services) enabled, as it does not work with traditional SMS or MMS messages. Users have a 15-minute window from the time the message is sent to make any edits by long-pressing the message bubble and selecting the edit icon.

The feature behaves differently depending on the recipient's device. In conversations between two Android users, the original message is replaced with the edited version. However, when messaging iPhone users, the edited message appears as a separate new message marked with an asterisk, while the original message remains visible. Group chats also do not fully support the feature. Additionally, message editing is only available on the mobile app and is not supported on the web version of Google Messages.

Another key aspect is that the edit history remains visible to all Android recipients. Anyone can long-press the edited message to view the original text before the correction. This transparency means the feature is useful for fixing minor typos but does not allow users to completely erase or hide previously sent content. Google’s new editing tool thus offers convenience with notable constraints regarding timing, device compatibility, and message history visibility.
