New German Ambassador to Israel Reflects on Challenging Role and Strong Bilateral Ties

Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, the newly appointed German ambassador to Israel, introduced himself in an Instagram video shortly after assuming his post. At 59, Lambsdorff expressed mixed feelings about his new role, describing his initial reaction as "oh dear" due to the challenging nature of the Middle East compared to his previous posting in Moscow. He shared that his first thought was how to break the news to his wife.

Lambsdorff described Israel as "warm, friendly, and challenging," noting that although he had visited Israel several times before, this was his first extended stay. He looks forward to meeting many interesting people, strengthening bilateral relations, and contributing to positive developments in the region. He emphasized the exceptional relationship between Germany and Israel, rooted in painful history but now marked by unprecedented cooperation, which he aims to expand further.

In a personal Instagram story, Lambsdorff revealed some of his preferences, including being a fan of the Cologne football team and his coffee habits. He also brought three types of headwear to Israel: a kippah, a baseball cap, and an elegant hat. Reflecting on his previous role as ambassador in Moscow for three years, he said he might miss the clear, cold winter days with blue skies and snow, a climate he was told is rare in Israel.
