Experts Explain Why Our Brains Dislike First Dates Due to Uncertainty and Stress
First dates trigger intense physical and mental reactions because the brain struggles with uncertainty, according to experts. Dr. Yulia Goland, a neuroscientist and psychologist at Reichman University, explains that the brain functions as a prediction machine, constantly trying to anticipate what will happen based on past experiences. However, during a first date, there is insufficient information to predict outcomes such as chemistry or mutual attraction, creating extreme uncertainty that activates the brain's stress system.
This uncertainty leads to the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can heighten alertness and focus in moderate amounts but impair communication and concentration if excessive. Goland notes that people often mistake their stress as being caused by the date itself, while it is primarily the brain's reaction to unpredictability. Additionally, concerns about how one is perceived by the date can intensify this stress response.
Dr. Roni Farber, head of public health at Pami, adds that the physical symptoms experienced, such as increased heart rate, sweating, and butterflies in the stomach, are due to activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hormone release. These physiological responses are similar to those before public speaking or job interviews. The brain also releases dopamine, enhancing feelings of pleasure and motivation, and if closeness develops, oxytocin is released to foster trust and bonding.
Past experiences influence how the brain reacts to first dates; negative memories may heighten stress, while positive ones can improve the experience. Goland advises adopting a curious mindset rather than a performance-driven one, likening it to kittens exploring a new environment. Understanding and working with the stress response can help individuals channel its energy positively instead of being overwhelmed by it.
