These vehicles, which now constitute over 40% of the market and have been on Israeli roads for more than three years, feature complex systems and numerous sensors but often lack the reliability standards familiar to Japanese car owners. Consumer complaints about frequent issues such as radiator failures, overheating, charging port damage, and suspension breakdowns have become highly visible on social media and owner groups, revealing a transparency that was previously absent.

Leasing companies report challenges maintaining Chinese EVs, sometimes requiring importers to guarantee maintenance and spare parts availability before acquisition. The core problem appears less about the number of faults and more about service quality and parts accessibility. Common faults include damage to charging port covers (difficult to close properly), rear parking sensors, and suspension components, which endure heavy wear due to the vehicles' weight.

A review of official spare parts price lists from Chinese brands like Chery, JAC, Geely, MG, and BYD, alongside non-Chinese brands Toyota and Hyundai, shows wide price ranges for common parts. For example, charging port covers cost between 221 and 3,971 shekels depending on the brand and model, while rear cameras range from 413 to over 3,500 shekels. Battery replacements, the most expensive component, can cost from about 26,000 to over 180,000 shekels, sometimes nearing or exceeding half the vehicle's value.

Multimedia screens, essential for vehicle control, also vary widely in price, from around 2,300 shekels for some BYD models to nearly 24,000 shekels for others. Importers' catalogs often lack clear model-specific details, complicating parts identification for consumers. Additionally, many parts are only available through official dealerships, and non-specialist workshops may lack the expertise to install them properly.

Given the rapid depreciation of Chinese EVs in Israel, spare part costs can represent a significant portion of the vehicle's real value, sometimes up to 20%. Buyers are advised to thoroughly inspect used vehicles before purchase and seek specialized workshops capable of sourcing and fitting used parts when possible. This situation underscores the growing pains of Israel's transition to electric mobility and the challenges posed by new market entrants with differing quality and service standards.
