Miki Geva Addresses Backlash Over Stand-Up Performance After IDF Soldier's Death Announcement

Months after a controversial video from the Likudiada event in Eilat sparked public outrage, Israeli comedian and actor Miki Geva has spoken out in an interview with Mako magazine to clarify what happened behind the scenes. The video showed the event host announcing the death of an IDF soldier, immediately followed by inviting Geva to perform stand-up comedy, which many viewed as insensitive.

Geva explained that he did not go on stage immediately after the announcement. He said, "The soldier was announced dead, then they said 'here's Miki,' and I went up asking if there were Ethiopians in the audience," emphasizing that the situation was not as it appeared in the footage. He noted that he was flown to Eilat and paid to perform, and that the timing was unfortunate but not intentional disrespect.

He recounted trying to delay his performance, asking what was happening and being told the audience insisted on the show continuing. Geva stressed that no one intended to belittle the fallen soldier, calling the incident a result of ignorance and blaming the event host for poor timing.

Following the incident, Geva met with the soldier's grieving parents to apologize and explain the circumstances. He revealed they are now collaborating on a memorial show in honor of their son.
