AI Token Costs Force Israeli Firms to Rethink Workforce and Budget Management

The story · English

Israeli organizations are facing a new budgeting challenge with the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools: managing the cost of AI tokens. Tokens are the units used to measure AI usage, including questions asked, documents processed, and responses generated by AI models. Unlike traditional labor costs, token expenses vary based on AI model complexity and usage, making them difficult to predict and control.

Inbal Namir, Managing Director at Deloitte Israel, explains that this shift represents a fundamental change in organizational economics. Companies must now manage both human labor costs and the unpredictable expenses of digital AI labor. This dual cost structure requires new management skills and budgeting approaches, as token consumption can significantly impact overall expenses.

Organizations are adapting by training employees on efficient AI use and establishing internal AI expert networks to promote best practices. Managers, especially middle management, must develop capabilities to guide teams on selecting appropriate AI models and monitoring token consumption. For example, uncontrolled AI use can lead to exorbitant costs, such as a case where an employee ran an overnight AI process costing $38,000.

To address these challenges, companies like Gin Technologies have developed AI token management platforms that allocate budgets per employee and allow managers to reassign unused token budgets. Their clients include major Israeli organizations such as Maccabi Healthcare Services, Israel Electric Corporation, Isracard, Mizrahi Bank, and the defense sector. These tools help balance encouraging AI adoption with controlling costs.

However, some experts caution against evaluating employees solely on token consumption. Dor Atiyas, co-founder of cybersecurity firm Cycode, argues that productivity and output quality remain the key performance indicators, not just token spending. He notes that experienced employees leverage AI tools to increase output, while less experienced workers may struggle with the pace of change.

As AI becomes integral to workplace operations, tokens have become a new organizational language influencing budgets, workflows, training, and management decisions. Israeli companies must now integrate AI resource management alongside traditional human resource management to optimize efficiency and control costs.
