Moovit Cuts 30% of Workforce Amid Organizational Shift Under Mobileye

Moovit, the Israeli public transportation app owned by Mobileye, is cutting about 30% of its workforce, approximately 60 employees, as part of a major organizational restructuring. This announcement follows Mobileye CEO Professor Amnon Shashua’s recent resignation and comes just two days after Monday.com announced mass layoffs in the Israeli tech sector.

Shashua revealed that Moovit’s B2B division will be scaled back, with some existing services discontinued to focus on a new strategy aligned with Mobileye’s autonomous vehicle ambitions. The two companies will integrate their operations, combining Moovit’s transportation app with Mobileye’s autonomous robotaxi services, which are planned for rollout in multiple cities including Tel Aviv.

Mobileye acquired Moovit in 2020 for $900 million intending to use it as a platform for its robotaxi services. However, the original plan was delayed and Moovit continued operating as a free public transit app. Recent attempts to sell Moovit at a lower price than the acquisition cost failed, prompting a strategic pivot back to Mobileye’s autonomous vehicle goals.

Shashua stated that by the end of 2024, Mobileye aims to begin commercial robotaxi operations in Florida with Volkswagen, with further expansions planned for 2027. The company is building a vertical division to manage all robotaxi activities, including leveraging Moovit’s assets to generate consumer demand. Mobileye is also collaborating with car manufacturers to supply vehicles equipped with its autonomous driving technology, positioning itself alongside competitors like Google’s Waymo.

Despite the layoffs and restructuring, Moovit’s public transportation app will continue to operate. The integration of Mobileye’s branding into Moovit’s app in the U.S. will strengthen brand recognition among hundreds of thousands of users. Shashua emphasized that the autonomous vehicle market is entering a significant growth phase, marking a key future growth engine for Mobileye alongside robotics.
