Mohammad Abu Fani heads to Serbia for Red Star Belgrade move
Mohammad Abu Fani, the Fradi midfielder and former Maccabi Haifa player, flew to Serbia on Friday morning, June 12, 2026, ahead of a formal signing with Red Star Belgrade. The Serbian club will reunite him with coach Dejan Stankovic, who previously coached him in Hungary.
This will be Abu Fani’s second stop in Europe. After a successful first season with Ferencvaros, he had wanted to make another step forward, and after three seasons in Hungary the transfer is now set to happen.
Stankovic was the key figure behind the deal, strongly pushing for the Israeli midfielder after returning to Red Star. The two first met in the Champions League playoff, when Maccabi Haifa eliminated the Serbs.
Abu Fani is expected to sign for three seasons and earn 750,000 euros a year, a 25 percent raise on his current salary at Ferencvaros. The Hungarian club will receive about 1.5 million euros, the same amount it paid Maccabi Haifa three seasons ago. A return to Israel and back to Maccabi Haifa was not an option, because he wanted a bigger financial step and top-flight Israeli clubs do not pay those sums, according to the report.
