Israeli TV Host Guy Pines Criticizes Rising Trend of Tisha B'Av Fasting as Hypocritical

Israeli media personality and television host Guy Pines sharply criticized the growing trend among secular Israelis to fast and publicly mourn on Tisha B'Av, the Jewish day commemorating the destruction of the Temple, in an Instagram post marking the day. Pines reflected on how, until recent years, most secular Israelis, including his own family, did not observe fasting or make a significant event of Tisha B'Av, despite its historical importance.

He described the recent surge in fasting and public mourning as a "trend" amplified by media coverage and social media, often accompanied by empty slogans about "baseless hatred." Pines expressed frustration at the contradiction between the public displays of mourning and the daily atmosphere of deep societal division and hatred in Israel, which he attributed to politically motivated discord aimed at maintaining power.

Pines lamented that these rituals have replaced genuine unity and meaningful engagement among Israelis, even those with differing political views. He concluded with a call to action, urging people to reject the hatred and division that plague Israeli society rather than merely observing symbolic fasts. He warned that failure to do so could lead to repeating tragic patterns from Jewish history.
