Israeli Minister Smotrich Reflects on Unity and Shared Loss Ahead of Tisha B'Av

Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich shared a message of unity ahead of Tisha B'Av, reflecting on his personal connection with former Minister Yizhar Shai and the broader Israeli community's shared mourning. Smotrich recounted how Shai's son, Staff Sergeant Yaron Uri Shai, was killed heroically defending Kibbutz Kerem Shalom during a terrorist attack on October 7. Despite political differences, Smotrich and Shai became close friends, supporting each other through difficult times, including when Smotrich's own son was critically wounded in Lebanon.

Smotrich emphasized that the destruction of the Second Temple symbolized the breakdown of unity among the Jewish people, caused by baseless hatred that undermined communal worship and mutual responsibility. He highlighted Jerusalem's role as a unifying city for all Jews and the importance of collective service to God as a nation rather than individuals.

He lamented how division led to exile and fragmentation but noted that in the past century, Jews have returned to Israel and rebuilt a sovereign state, restoring national unity. Smotrich expressed hope that from the sorrow of Tisha B'Av, Israelis will heal divisions and rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple with love and solidarity, quoting Rabbi Kook on overcoming baseless hatred with unconditional love.
