Israeli Government Urges Supreme Court Not to Intervene in National Inquiry Delay Over October 7 Attacks

On Wednesday evening, the Israeli government submitted its response to petitions challenging the delay in establishing a state-appointed commission of inquiry into the events of October 7. The government requested that the Supreme Court refrain from intervening due to the sensitive timing amid the election period. It explained that the legislative process to form a national commission, composed of politicians rather than a traditional state inquiry panel, was halted following the dissolution of the Knesset. The government noted that the bill had passed its first reading and intends to complete the legislation once the 26th Knesset convenes. Outside the Supreme Court, the October Council, representing bereaved families from the October 7 attacks, expressed outrage. They accused the government of deliberately stalling the investigation to mislead the public and avoid uncovering the truth. The council vowed that the truth and accountability would eventually be achieved despite government delays. Meanwhile, the Movement for Quality Government, one of the petitioners, urged the court to prevent the government from obstructing the inquiry and demanded the immediate appointment of a judicial-led commission. They cited support from over 35,000 petitioners, bereaved families, and the public's right to know the facts behind the failure and responsibility for the tragedy.

The controversy follows the initial approval of a bill to establish a political inquiry commission into the October 7 attacks, which has faced criticism from hostages' families and activists who argue it lacks independence and transparency.
