Italy to Host August Negotiations Between Israel and Lebanon Amid Security Disputes

Italy announced it will host a new round of negotiations between Israel and Lebanon on August 4, following the previous talks held last week in Rome. These discussions come after an agreement was signed at the end of June, but significant gaps remain to be addressed in the upcoming meeting.

Meanwhile, progress has been made on the ground as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Lebanese army began implementing a pilot withdrawal in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces have started pulling back from two designated areas in the security zone, which Lebanese troops have entered to prevent Hezbollah from regaining control. After this pilot phase, the IDF is expected to withdraw from the rest of the security zone.

However, Lebanon is pushing to accelerate the withdrawal, while Israel's chief negotiator, Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, has repeatedly emphasized that the IDF will only withdraw once Hezbollah is disarmed. This condition poses a major sticking point, as the Lebanese army has struggled for over a year and a half to disarm Hezbollah.

The core dispute centers on whether Israel will agree to withdraw if Hezbollah remains armed, or if the Lebanese military must take stronger action against the militant group. Italy’s role as host underscores its diplomatic involvement in facilitating these sensitive talks between the two countries.
