Israeli Government Launches Emergency Effort to Block Organized Crime from Public Tenders
Senior officials from Israeli government ministries, law enforcement agencies, and major state-owned companies convened on Tuesday at the Israel Electric Corporation site in Rishon Lezion for an emergency conference addressing the infiltration of organized crime into the public sector. The meeting was initiated jointly by the Prime Minister's Office's Arab Society Crime Fighting Headquarters and the Government Companies Authority, following directives from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to intensify the fight against crime and establish oversight mechanisms to prevent criminal organizations from penetrating public tenders.
During the conference, operational strategies were discussed to combat threats such as extortion and criminal takeovers of government contracts. The Government Companies Authority presented data confirming attempts by organized crime groups to infiltrate these tenders. As a result, a decision was made to create an inter-agency collaboration involving government companies, ministries, law enforcement, and regulatory bodies. Additionally, the advancement of amendments to the Public Entities Transactions Law during the election period was considered to strengthen governmental tools against criminal corporations in tenders.
The event featured roundtable discussions with senior representatives from the National Security Council, Israel Police, Ministry of Justice, State Prosecution, Tax Authority, Competition Authority, Economic Warfare Headquarters in the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Construction and Housing. Discussions focused on combating extortion, preventing criminal infiltration of tenders, and protecting public employees from threats. Officials from the Ministry of Finance, National Security Council, and Enforcement and Collection Authority also participated.
Yossi Moial, head of the Arab Society Crime Fighting Headquarters, described organized crime as a strategic threat to Israel's economy and sovereignty, emphasizing the importance of close cooperation among civilian, criminal, and economic enforcement agencies. Roee Kahlon, Director of the Government Companies Authority, highlighted the economic significance, noting that government companies manage assets exceeding 300 billion shekels and invest tens of billions annually in national infrastructure. He stressed the responsibility to ensure public funds are managed free from criminal influence, maintaining fair competition and public trust.
