Israeli Finance Minister Secures Permanent Status for Settlement Administration in Defense Ministry

The Settlement Administration has been officially established as a permanent body within Israel's Defense Ministry, following a decision led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. The move was approved by the Civil Service Commission's Service Committee, chaired by State Service Commissioner Doron Cohen. Alongside this, the term of Hillel Rot, Deputy Head of the Civil Administration, was extended from four to six years. The decision ensures that the Settlement Administration will continue its operations within the Defense Ministry beyond the upcoming elections, with Rot's extended tenure allowing continuity in leadership.

This initiative was coordinated between the Finance Ministry, Defense Ministry, and the Civil Service Commission. According to Smotrich's office, the measure aims to solidify reforms made in recent years regarding settlement policy and to guarantee their persistence in the future. It also strengthens the civilian component managing life in the West Bank, ensuring the ongoing function of the mechanisms established under recent reforms.

The move comes amid concerns about potential policy reversals if a left-wing government led by Gadi Eizenkot were to take power. Officials close to Smotrich expressed fears that such a government might reverse settlement advances, possibly leading to evacuations and the establishment of a Palestinian state. Cementing the Settlement Administration's status and extending Rot's term are intended to safeguard settlement activities regardless of future political changes.
