Finance Minister Smotrich Condemns Attorney General, Defends Torah Study Law, Calls for Settlement Expansion in Gaza
Finance Minister and Religious Zionism leader Bezalel Smotrich sharply criticized Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara during an interview at the Israel Hayom conference. Smotrich accused Baharav-Miara of criminal misconduct and abusing her power, calling for criminal investigation and defamation lawsuits by those she allegedly defamed. He described her as a political actor imposing her opposition party's agenda on the Israeli majority by force and violence. Regarding the Netanyahu trial, Smotrich said Netanyahu's acquittal is insufficient and demanded accountability for those involved in fabricating charges against him, including Baharav-Miara.
On economic matters, Smotrich highlighted Israel's strong economic indicators despite ongoing conflicts on seven fronts, supporting a broader interest rate cut. He cited the strength of the shekel, stock market, high-tech sector, employment, and inflation within target range. He praised the government's management of the multifront war, stating Israel's strategic and security situation is much improved since October 6.
Addressing the Basic Law on Torah Study, Smotrich clarified his opposition to earlier versions that implied exemption from military service, asserting the current law does not permit draft evasion or undermine other values. He said the law protects Hesder yeshivas from opposition attacks and balances equality, military service, employment, core studies, and Torah study. He dismissed Treasury warnings about economic harm as "complete ignorance."
Regarding the Gaza campaign, Smotrich said Israel has made significant gains, controlling 60 to 70 percent of the territory, with all hostages returned and international commitment to dismantle Hamas and demilitarize Gaza. He emphasized that reconstruction is impossible without demilitarization. Smotrich urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to authorize Israeli settlement construction in Gaza, proposing at least three new communities. He argued that territorial control is key to defeating the enemy and securing victory, stating, "Take land, build settlements, establish your security. This is the picture of victory."
