Bedbug Infestations Cause Persistent Bites and Sleep Loss Among Israeli Children

Many Israelis, including children, are experiencing relentless itching and sleepless nights due to bedbug infestations. These tiny insects hide in mattresses, cracks, and furniture, making them difficult to detect and eradicate. Itamar, 35, from Holon, shared his experience of waking up with unexplained bites, initially mistaking them for mosquito stings. After discovering the bugs on his bed, a pest control expert advised him to discard his mattress and bed frame, a recommendation that shocked him.

Professional exterminator Avi Mizrahi explained that bedbugs are not limited to private homes but are also found in hotels, military bases, and prisons. Their ability to hide in tiny crevices complicates eradication efforts, which require a thorough three-step process involving steaming, vacuuming, and spraying. Mizrahi noted that while some pest controllers recommend discarding infested furniture, many cases allow for saving the items, reducing costs.

Dr. Ilan Yehoshua, head of family medicine at Maccabi Healthcare in southern Israel, noted that bedbug bites vary widely in appearance and severity, with some individuals developing large, red, and stiff areas due to allergic reactions to the bugs' saliva. He highlighted that cases increase during summer months, coinciding with travel and communal sleeping arrangements, including in the military. Although bedbugs are not proven to transmit diseases, the intense itching can cause secondary skin infections, sometimes requiring steroid or antibiotic treatments. Yehoshua emphasized the importance of addressing the infestation source through professional pest control to prevent ongoing issues.
