Reserve Soldier Attacked by Dozens of Ultra-Orthodox Protesters While Walking Dog in Tel Aviv

Idan, a reserve soldier who has completed hundreds of reserve duty days, was violently attacked late at night while walking his dog near his home in central Tel Aviv. The incident occurred between Monday and Tuesday after midnight, when Idan unexpectedly encountered a large group of ultra-Orthodox protesters outside the Attorney General's residence at Kikar HaMedina. Unaware of the protest, he found himself surrounded by dozens of ultra-Orthodox men who began shouting at him, calling his dog "unclean," and then physically assaulted both him and his dog.

According to Idan, the attackers kicked his dog and then turned their violence on him, kicking and punching him and tearing his shirt. He described the experience as feeling like "a spit in the face." Fortunately, two police officers who happened to be nearby intervened and rescued him, escorting him into a building lobby where neighbors gave him water. After about half an hour, Idan and other residents returned to their homes.

Idan linked the attack to broader tensions over the military draft, expressing frustration that ultra-Orthodox men do not share the burden of military service. He said, "I am a reservist who is already angry that they do not take part in the burden. I pay taxes and fund Torah students, but to endure this kind of violence is a spit in the face." The attack highlights the ongoing friction between secular Israelis serving in the military and ultra-Orthodox communities protesting conscription.

The police have not yet released a statement on the incident. Idan's experience underscores the risks faced by individuals caught in the middle of ideological protests in public spaces in Tel Aviv.
