Sofia Coppola Directs Intimate Documentary on Fashion Icon Marc Jacobs’ Creative Journey
Sofia Coppola, acclaimed filmmaker and fashion icon, has released a new documentary titled "Marc by Sofia," focusing on her longtime friend and renowned fashion designer Marc Jacobs. The film debuted at the Venice Film Festival and offers an intimate look at Jacobs’ creative process during the twelve weeks leading up to his Spring 2024 collection. Coppola, who has never directed a documentary before, was inspired to take on the project by Jane Varney and RJ Cutler, and she aimed to create a personal yet non-intrusive portrait of Jacobs’ life and work.
The documentary opens with a montage of Jacobs’ career highlights, including a 2013 archival clip from Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show where Jacobs recalls an early Vogue cover featuring Israeli model Michaela Bercu wearing his design. Jacobs reminisced about his early days working for the Perry Ellis brand and the public’s surprise that despite his Vogue cover, he still commuted by subway. Coppola and Jacobs first met in the early 1990s, bonding over shared artistic interests and a mutual appreciation for music and culture. Their friendship has endured through various life and creative phases, with Jacobs supporting Coppola’s projects and even designing costumes for her films.
The film captures the chaotic and inspiring atmosphere behind Jacobs’ fashion shows, emphasizing the trust and organic collaboration between Coppola and Jacobs. It also explores Jacobs’ personal history, including his upbringing by his grandmother Helen after losing his father at a young age and his struggles with addiction, which he overcame in 2007. Coppola’s approach avoids sensationalism, focusing instead on the beauty and joy of Jacobs’ creative spirit.
"Marc by Sofia" will be available for viewing in Israel starting July 21 on yes Doco, yesVOD, HOT8, HOTVOD, and NEXT TV. The documentary also features interviews with cultural figures such as Kim Gordon, Spike Jonze, and Chloë Sevigny, and includes rare archival footage from Jacobs’ early career and tenure as Louis Vuitton’s artistic director. Both Coppola and Jacobs reflect on how their friendship and the fashion industry have evolved since the 1990s, highlighting the simplicity and authenticity that still resonate today.
