Israel Confirms Launch of Security Pilot in Southern Lebanon Villages

Following an American announcement on Monday, Israel's military confirmed the launch of a pilot program in three southern Lebanese villages: Froun, Srifa, and Zawtar al-Gharbiya. The pilot involves coordinated efforts between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the U.S. military, and the Lebanese army to implement a new security arrangement. The IDF spokesperson stated that the program is underway and emphasized that Israel will respond strongly to any violations of the agreement.

The pilot aims to reposition IDF forces in one of the designated areas to enable the Lebanese army to carry out its security responsibilities while ensuring the safety of Israeli troops and maintaining Israel's right to self-defense. Israeli defense officials described the initiative as a "sovereignty test" for the Lebanese army, which must prove it is the sole authorized armed force in the area. The final implementation framework has yet to be determined.

In the event of violations by Hezbollah, the IDF will address them through a coordination mechanism mediated by the United States. The entire pilot will be closely monitored under Washington's leadership. The overarching goal is to disarm Hezbollah's illegal weapons. Israel also affirmed it will maintain its presence in the security zone as necessary to protect northern Israeli communities and retain freedom of action to neutralize threats against its forces deployed in the region.
