Rimon Kirshat Shares Harrowing Captivity Story and Loss of Husband in Gaza Kidnapping

Rimon Kirshat, an Israeli woman held captive by Hamas, recounts her ordeal alongside her husband, Yagiv Buchstab, who was killed in captivity. The couple, married two years before their abduction on October 7, 2023, were inseparable and shared a deep bond. During their captivity in Gaza, Kirshat protected Buchstab physically and emotionally, even stabbing a captor with a fork to prevent harm to him. She describes enduring nearly four days in total darkness inside a small cage and resisting captors despite severe physical abuse.

Kirshat vividly recalls the moment she was released and faced her captors with defiance, a gesture that became symbolic of her courage. However, she was devastated by Buchstab’s death, which the Israeli military announced in July 2024, revealing he had been killed months earlier in February. Now living near the Gaza border in a new home, Kirshat struggles with trauma, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and ongoing battles with the National Insurance Institute over disability benefits. Despite the hardships, she expresses readiness to face future threats and hopes to rebuild her life, including dreams of having children and returning to her profession in healthcare. She also thanks the Israeli public for their support and solidarity.

Friends have launched a fundraising campaign to assist with Kirshat’s rehabilitation and home construction, highlighting the community’s ongoing commitment to her recovery.
