Israeli Expert Cautions Against Water Births Despite Pain Relief Benefits During Labor
Professor Eitan Friedman, head of the Early Detection Institute at Assuta Medical Center, clarified in a recent interview on the program "HaOlam HaBoker" the distinction between laboring in water and giving birth in water. While many women choose water births, Friedman emphasized that staying in water during contractions is recommended to ease pain, but delivering the baby in water is not fully advised.
He highlighted that water immersion during labor contractions has proven benefits for pain relief but only applies to women with low-risk pregnancies. He stressed the importance of prior risk assessment for each pregnancy before considering this option. Additionally, Friedman underscored that the procedure must be conducted under full medical supervision in a healthcare facility with clean water to ensure immediate intervention if complications arise.
The growing trend of home water births, often shown in viral videos, contrasts with the cautious medical stance. Friedman warned that not all natural methods are safe and that the decision to labor or deliver in water should be personal and free of external pressure. He concluded by reiterating the necessity of medical oversight and individualized risk evaluation for water labor and birth.
