Lebanon’s Coastal City Tyre Begins Recovery After Hezbollah Conflict Amid Ongoing Tensions

The southern Lebanese coastal city of Tyre is gradually recovering from extensive destruction caused by recent conflict involving Hezbollah. Once a popular tourist destination known for its beaches and historical coexistence of different religious communities, Tyre suffered significant damage and mass displacement during the fighting. The city’s partial revival follows the late June announcement of a U.S.-brokered framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which has encouraged displaced residents to return.

Despite the progress, security concerns persist in the Tyre district due to ongoing terrorist activity, including a recent attack in the nearby village of Al-Mansouri. Local media and social networks have recently shared images and videos showing the city’s streets and beaches slowly coming back to life. On July 12, a major beach cleanup event took place at the Tyre Nature Reserve, involving officials and volunteers aiming to restore the area’s natural heritage.

The Tyre Nature Reserve, located south of the city, is a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring protected dunes, nesting sites for sea turtles and birds, springs, and historical wetlands. While the beaches are reopening, many streets still bear the scars of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions. The municipality regularly announces demolition schedules for damaged buildings and urges residents to attend the process.

Local businesses are reopening, including cafes and restaurants, though customer numbers remain low and hotel occupancy is limited. Residents like Fatima Suleiman emphasize the importance of returning to normal life, especially for children’s psychological relief. Deputy Mayor Alwan Sharaf al-Din noted that about 90% of displaced residents have returned, with ongoing repairs to infrastructure and homes. However, full reconstruction depends on compensation linked to negotiations with Israel.

Regional media highlight the surreal atmosphere of children playing amid the sounds of distant explosions, reflecting the fragile balance between recovery and security challenges. The municipality views reopening the beach as a key step toward economic revival, hoping for increased tourism if calm continues through mid-July.
