Defense Minister Orders Immediate Removal of Reservist Over Political Refusal Comments

Amri Ronen, a left-wing activist and reservist officer affiliated with the 'Brothers in Arms' organization, was ordered removed from the IDF reserves by Defense Minister Israel Katz on Sunday. The directive came after Ronen made statements in a televised interview regarding political refusal to serve, which Katz deemed as promoting refusal within the military ranks.

In the interview on 'Meet the Press,' Ronen was asked if he would remove calls for refusal from the public agenda. He responded that he would not, emphasizing his commitment to preventing what he described as a potential regime change in Israel. Ronen stated that citizens should do everything possible to maintain democratic checks and balances.

Katz issued a formal letter to the IDF Chief of Staff instructing the immediate dismissal of Ronen from all military frameworks, citing the need to keep the army apolitical and focused solely on national security. Katz stressed zero tolerance for any calls to disobey military service, reaffirming his ongoing efforts since becoming defense minister to eradicate refusal from the IDF.

Ronen, who holds the rank of captain in a distinguished reserve unit and served over 300 active days during the recent war, is also a candidate in the Democratic Party primaries and a founding member of the left-wing protest group 'Brothers in Arms,' known for opposing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The incident highlights tensions between political activism and military service in Israel, with Katz underscoring that similar cases will be handled strictly in the future to preserve the IDF's integrity and operational focus.
