Israeli Defense Minister Orders Removal of Reservist for Public Refusal to Serve

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has instructed the IDF Chief of Staff to remove reservist Omri Ronen from reserve duty after Ronen publicly declared his intention to refuse reserve service as part of his political activism. Ronen, a candidate in the Democratic Party primaries, stated in an interview on the program "Meet the Press" that he would do everything, including refusing to report for reserve duty, to advance his political agenda.

In a letter sent from the Defense Minister's office to the Chief of Staff, Katz condemned Ronen's statements as a serious offense that encourages refusal to serve and harms the IDF's resilience. The letter emphasized that anyone who publicly calls for refusal or disobedience to reserve service will no longer be summoned for reserve duty. Katz underscored that such expressions undermine the army's values, cohesion, and operational readiness.

The Defense Minister ordered that Ronen be removed from all reserve service frameworks due to his public advocacy of refusal for political reasons. The directive was described as a precedent, establishing that similar cases in the future will be handled in the same manner. Katz stressed his firm stance against what he called the "scourge of refusal" and declared he will not allow it to return to the IDF ranks.
