Three Palestinians Released After Group Rape Allegations in Ramla Prove Unfounded

Three young Palestinian men from the territories, arrested last month on suspicion of gang-raping a young woman in Ramla, were released from custody last weekend. The case began about three weeks ago when the woman reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted in an apartment in Ramla where Palestinian workers reside. Following the complaint, police raided the apartment and arrested one suspect with legal residency in Israel. Two additional suspects were later apprehended, one during a police raid in the village of Yatta near Hebron, and the third in the territories, then transferred to Ramla for questioning.

All three suspects, represented by public defenders Abd Abu Amar, Dima Bernshtein, and Muhammad Anbusi, denied the allegations. After multiple extensions of their detention and a review of the investigation materials by the Central District Prosecutor’s Office, the suspects were released last Thursday. The lead suspect stated during interrogation that he met the woman through social media and that their interactions were consensual. He claimed he paid for her taxi to Ramla and bought her items upon arrival. His lawyer, Abd Abu Amar, emphasized that all communications between the two indicated a consensual relationship between adults.

The public defender’s office criticized the police for prematurely publicizing the arrests and using excessive force, which they said harmed the suspects’ dignity and freedom. They noted that the suspects consistently denied the accusations and that the investigation ultimately supported their version of events. Only one suspect now faces charges for illegal residency in Israel. The case highlights concerns about police conduct and the rush to judgment in sensitive investigations.
