Rumors surfaced after journalist and author Valerie Steevers wrote in a column on UnHerd, later echoed by the Hollywood Reporter, that literary circles in New York believe the story reflects the relationship between Cusk and Portman. Steevers noted many biographical parallels between the character and Portman, including the character’s feelings of disappointment and betrayal over her portrayal, which allegedly mirror Portman’s real-life reaction.

Neither Cusk nor Portman have publicly confirmed these claims, and no official statement has been made linking the novel directly to Portman’s life.
