Netanyahu Warns Likud Local Leaders of Primary Cancellation If War Erupts

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz met with Likud local leaders on June 30, 2026, during a visit to southern Lebanon. The meeting focused on party arrangements following a court ruling that annulled votes by Likud's central committee members. Netanyahu emphasized his preference for holding primaries to select the party list, describing them as vital for energizing the party and serving as an important rehearsal ahead of elections.

During the discussion, local leaders agreed on expanding the national withdrawal list to 25 places, with some proposing an increase to 35. They supported the formation of a coordinating committee, although Netanyahu opposed it. The leaders told Netanyahu that if a war breaks out, he would have the authority to decide whether to establish such a committee.

A senior Likud official present at the meeting noted that Netanyahu planned to meet with Minister Haim Katz later the same day to reach further agreements. A Likud constitution committee meeting was scheduled for that day, with a central committee session and vote planned for Thursday.

The possibility was raised that in the event of war or escalation, the primaries could be canceled and replaced by an advisory committee appointed by the prime minister. This scenario is viewed unfavorably by most Likud members, who fear internal strife, disputes, and resentment over candidate placements decided by a small committee rather than through primaries.
