Tragic Death of 4-Year-Old Leads to Rare Domino Liver Transplant Saving Four Lives

Arbel Uri Hoffman, a 4-year-old girl from the Tekuma settlement, tragically died in a severe car accident. Despite doctors' efforts at Sheba Medical Center to save her, she was declared brain dead. Her parents, Yaakov and Hila Hoffman, made the decision to donate her organs, enabling a rare and complex transplant operation that saved four lives.

Arbel's liver was transplanted into a 10-year-old girl suffering from a metabolic disease that rendered her own liver nonfunctional, though healthy. This allowed for a domino liver transplant, where the 10-year-old's healthy liver was then transplanted into a 44-year-old woman at Beilinson Hospital. Additionally, Arbel's two kidneys were transplanted into two teenagers, a 14-year-old boy and girl. All three initial surgeries took place at Schneider Children's Medical Center.

Dr. Tamar Ashkenazi, director of the National Transplant Center, explained that the domino transplant is a rare and complex procedure requiring precise timing and matching of donor and recipient sizes. The successful outcome was a significant medical achievement.

Arbel's parents expressed that donating her organs was a way to continue her legacy of kindness and love. They described Arbel as a bright, loving child nicknamed "Sunshine" for her radiant smile and generous spirit. They find comfort in knowing her donation continues to give life and hope to others.
