Israeli Police Use Drones to Record Traffic Violations and Send Fines Directly to Drivers
The Israeli Police Traffic Department has recently introduced new aerial enforcement tools, including drones and helicopters, to combat dangerous traffic violations and reduce road accidents. These devices monitor drivers committing offenses such as crossing solid white lines, running red lights, and using mobile phones while driving. The drones operate around the clock, including late-night hours, capturing violations discreetly without the driver’s awareness.
Traffic officer Ram Yehuda explained that drivers continue driving after committing offenses, unaware they are being recorded. Once the footage is reviewed, the police send the driver a fine notice by mail, increasing enforcement efficiency and aiming to lower accident rates. Sometimes, police vehicles on the ground receive live footage and stop the offending driver immediately.
The focus is primarily on life-threatening violations, but the police also document other offenses like texting while driving. Recently, the Traffic Department also equipped undercover police cars with special cameras to record violations. These enhanced enforcement measures reflect the police’s ongoing efforts to deter dangerous driving and improve road safety in Israel.
