US Authorities Probe White House Teleprompter Operator for Illegal Betting on Trump Speeches
US federal law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into a White House teleprompter operator suspected of using privileged access to President Donald Trump's official speech texts to profit from betting. According to ABC News, the operator allegedly earned over $100,000 by placing bets on Trump's speeches through Kalshi, an online prediction market platform that allows wagering on various events.
This case adds to growing concerns among US security and enforcement bodies about the misuse of sensitive internal information for financial gain on prediction platforms. Around three months ago, a US Special Forces soldier involved in the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was charged with betting on the operation's success before it occurred. Staff Sergeant Gannon Ken Van Dyke opened an account on the Polymarket betting site in December and wagered $32,000 that Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January.
Van Dyke's bet was unusual given the low odds of 6.5% two days before the operation, which rose to 11% the night before it took place. Prosecutors allege he relied on classified internal information as he was involved in planning and executing the mission that led to Maduro's capture on January 3. Following the operation, Van Dyke's winnings of nearly $500,000 raised suspicions, prompting an investigation. He faces five charges including theft and misuse of classified government information and fraud related to 13 bets placed between December 27 and January 2. The funds were reportedly transferred to a foreign cryptocurrency vault.
The investigations highlight increasing scrutiny over insider information exploitation in US government and military contexts, with authorities monitoring prediction markets for illegal activity.
