Former Shin Bet Agent Quickly Raises Stolen Funds for Special Needs School Summer Activities

Yossi Avni, a former Shin Bet agent who spent decades securing Israeli airplanes worldwide, recently helped replace stolen funds intended for summer activities at the special needs school "Yuvalim" in Afula-Illit. The school, which serves 62 students aged 6 to 21 with cerebral palsy and complex motor disabilities from northern Israel, had raised about 5,000 shekels to enrich its July-August summer camp with special outings and events. However, the money was stolen during a break-in at the school on the night between Saturday and Sunday.

The school filed a police report and launched an investigation. Dganit Steinhaur, the school principal, described the theft as a cruel act that robbed the children of their anticipated summer joy. One student, Zohar Leshem, expressed anger over the theft of funds meant for their activities. Coincidentally, a large regional security coordinators' training conference was taking place at the school shortly after the theft. During the event, Avni shared the incident, which moved him deeply.

Within an hour, Avni mobilized his former Shin Bet colleagues and other security personnel who had experience protecting Israeli aircraft. Together, they raised the entire stolen amount and even continue to receive donations. Avni emphasized that everyone contributed according to their ability and expressed pride in the collective effort, calling it "the beautiful Israel."

Afula Mayor Avi Elkabetz praised the security guards' generosity, highlighting how they enabled the students to enjoy their planned summer experiences like any other children in Israel. Dr. Orna Simhon, head of the Northern District Education Ministry, also thanked the donors and condemned the theft, hoping the police would apprehend the culprits.
