Netanyahu and Trump Prepare for Eighth Meeting Amid Diverging Views on Regional Security

Since Donald Trump began his second term as U.S. president in January 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met with him seven times. Their eighth meeting is scheduled for next week, focusing on critical issues including Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, Turkey, and upcoming elections in both Israel and the United States. Israel’s elections are set for October 27, while the U.S. midterms will occur in November.

Trump aims to discuss achieving calm in the region, advocating for Israeli military withdrawals from Syria and southern Lebanon. He has expressed confidence that Lebanese militant group Hezbollah can be handled more precisely than by the Israeli Defense Forces. Trump also views Turkish President Erdogan as an ally, contrasting with Netanyahu’s government, which considers Erdogan an adversary, especially regarding the potential transfer of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.

Netanyahu, however, holds a different stance, emphasizing a more assertive Israeli presence in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria, stating, "Where is the Gaza envelope? Inside Gaza. And the Lebanon envelope? In Lebanon. And the Syria envelope? In Syria." This reflects a fundamental policy divergence between the two leaders.

Iran remains a central topic, with Netanyahu pushing for Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets, including power stations and bridges, a move Trump has so far restrained but hinted could begin soon. There is mention of a friendly foreign military ready to join such operations. Additionally, Arab states have communicated to Trump that Netanyahu is an obstacle to his vision for the region.

Netanyahu plans to visit Washington early next week to engage in these discussions, underscoring the complex and multifaceted nature of Israeli-American relations amid shifting regional dynamics and electoral pressures.
