Israeli Rights Groups File Supreme Court Petitions Against Law Weakening Attorney General Role
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel and the Movement for Quality Government have filed petitions with the Supreme Court challenging a new law that diminishes the authority of the Attorney General. The Movement for Quality Government condemned the legislation as a "last-minute coup by an illegitimate coalition," warning that the Attorney General will effectively become the government’s private lawyer. The Association for Civil Rights stated that the law allows the government to disregard the Attorney General’s legal opinions, prevents the Attorney General from presenting positions in court, and removes a key oversight mechanism that protects human rights and the rule of law.
