Knesset Passes Law Severely Limiting Government Legal Advisor's Authority
The Knesset approved in its second and third readings a controversial law restricting the powers of the Attorney General by a decisive vote of 65 in favor and 51 against. The legislation allows the government to reject the Attorney General's legal opinions, appoint separate legal representation in the Supreme Court, and even prohibit the Attorney General from appearing in court to argue against the government's position. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was absent during the vote, while coalition rebels who opposed other recent bills supported this law following Netanyahu's request. This marks a significant shift in the balance of legal authority within the Israeli government.
