Iran Regime Accelerates Political Executions Amid Global Distractions

A new report by the human rights organization Iran Human Rights reveals a sharp increase in the execution of political prisoners in Iran since the start of 2024. At least 47 political prisoners have been executed so far this year, compared to only 16 during the same period last year. The organization attributes this surge to the Iranian regime exploiting international tensions and ongoing conflicts to intensify repression away from global scrutiny.

Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, head of Iran Human Rights, explains that the regime views the world's focus on other crises as an opportunity to carry out executions without facing the usual political backlash. Recent cases include the execution of Mohammad Amini Dehaghani, who was arrested during protests and sentenced in a trial deemed unfair. The regime continues to rely on forced confessions obtained through torture and threats to justify death sentences.

Previous executions, such as those of Naser Bakirzadeh and Mehrab Abdollahzadeh in May, exposed a pattern where detainees confess under severe physical and psychological torture but deny involvement in the alleged crimes during prison conversations. Currently, two brothers imprisoned before the recent wave of protests face execution on charges of "corruption on earth." Their family, residing in Germany, is campaigning internationally to prevent their execution.

Despite widespread protests in Iran resulting in thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of arrests, international support for the opposition has waned over time. The White House's tone has softened amid the ongoing war and global economic impacts. A recent memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran notably omits any mention of persecuted dissidents or serious human rights violations, leaving political prisoners without significant international protection.
