Ben Gurion Airport Denies Closure Rumors Amid Security Escalation
In recent hours, social media has been flooded with false rumors claiming that Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) is set to close due to the escalating security situation in Israel. The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) has officially denied these claims, labeling them as fake news and reassuring travelers that the airport will continue operating normally.
Behind the scenes, discussions are ongoing between the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Transport regarding airport operations amid the heightened tensions. Efforts are underway to reduce the number of American military aircraft parked at Ben Gurion, including preventing additional tanker planes from landing and removing some already on the tarmac. These measures aim to preserve parking capacity for civilian flights and avoid cancellations during the busy summer travel season.
The Ministry of Transport emphasized that Ben Gurion is a civilian airport and must maintain its operational capacity even during complex security periods. Current estimates suggest that allowing up to 20 American military planes to remain on-site will not disrupt the planned flight schedule. This is critical as air traffic is recovering, with over 100,000 passengers expected daily during the peak summer season, levels not seen since regular operations resumed.
Both the IAA and the Ministry of Transport recognize that any disruption to Ben Gurion’s routine operations could negatively impact foreign airlines, many of which have only recently resumed flights to Israel. As of now, there are no changes to airport guidelines, and Ben Gurion continues to function as usual.
