The story · English

Rabbi Mordechai HaKohen Baak, a prominent Torah scholar and head of the "Tiferet Moshe" yeshiva as well as the chief rabbi of the "Segulat Yisrael" community in Monsey, New York, passed away suddenly on Tuesday morning at age 80. He collapsed from a sudden cardiac arrest while on his way to begin his daily Torah teaching. Despite advanced resuscitation efforts, he died, leaving behind thousands of students and numerous families deeply mourning his loss.

Born in Presburg (Bratislava), Czechoslovakia, shortly after World War II, Rabbi Baak was a first-generation survivor of European Jewry. His family, affiliated with the Munkatch Hasidic dynasty, immigrated to Montreal, Canada, where he was raised. Recognizing his talents, his father sent him to study at the renowned Nitra Yeshiva under Rabbi Michael Dov Weissmandl and later at Lakewood Yeshiva with Rabbi Shneur Kotler.

A defining chapter in his life was his move to Jerusalem to study at the Brisk Yeshiva under Rabbi Yitzchak Dov (Beryl) Soloveitchik. Rabbi Baak quickly mastered the complex Brisk analytical method, earning high praise from his mentor. He developed a close study partnership with Rabbi Soloveitchik's son, Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Soloveitchik, the current Brisk head.

After returning to the U.S. in 1969, Rabbi Baak married the daughter of Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech Kahana, a leading Satmar Hasid, and became closely aligned with the Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum. He served as head of the Nitra Yeshiva and later moved to Monsey in 1991. In the 2000s, he was appointed chief rabbi of the Segulat Yisrael community and founded the "Tiferet Moshe" yeshiva, which now educates about 80 students, mainly from Satmar backgrounds, combining Brisk methodology with a staunch anti-Zionist ideology.

Rabbi Baak was known for his uncompromising Torah positions, including opposition to the eruv in Borough Park and denunciation of alternative medicine practices as forbidden by Jewish law. In 2023, he actively opposed government interference in Orthodox education in New York, meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson to advocate against such measures.

His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, departing from his yeshiva in Monsey to the local cemetery. His passing leaves a profound void in his family, community, and the thousands of students he taught over decades.
