The story · English

The American Torah and Hasidic community mourns the passing of Rabbi Mordechai Cohen Beck, zt"l, head of the Tiferet Moshe Yeshiva in Monsey, who died at the age of 80. Rabbi Beck was regarded as one of the leading Torah teachers of his generation, having led his yeshiva for decades and educating thousands of students. He was especially known for introducing and spreading the Brisker method of Talmud study within the Hasidic circles of America.

Born on the 21st of Nisan 5706 (1946) in Presburg, Czechoslovakia (now Bratislava, Slovakia), to Rabbi Yehuda and Mrs. Chava Beck from a distinguished Munkatch Hasidic family, he survived the hardships of World War II. His family emigrated to Montreal, Canada, where he grew in Torah and piety. In his youth, he studied at the renowned Nitra Yeshiva under Rabbi Michael Dov Weissmandl and Rabbi Yaakov Hornstein, then continued at Lakewood Yeshiva, where he gained the favor of Rabbi Shneur Kotler.

Driven by a passion for Torah, he immigrated to Israel and studied under Rabbi Yosef Dov (Berel) Soloveitchik, son of Rabbi Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik of Brisk. Rabbi Beck was among the foremost students and close associates of Rabbi Berel and also studied with his son, Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Soloveitchik, current head of Brisk Yeshiva. He was a pioneer in disseminating the Brisker method among Hasidim in America, carefully preserving its precise learning tradition.

In 1969, he returned to America and married Mrs. Fromet Beck, daughter of the prominent Satmar Hasid Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech Kahana of Williamsburg. He developed a deep connection with the Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, adopting his anti-Zionist worldview. Combining the analytical depth of the Lithuanian-Brisker approach with the warmth and sanctity of Satmar Hasidism, Rabbi Beck served as head of Nitra Yeshiva in 1979 before founding Tiferet Moshe Yeshiva in Monsey in 1991. The yeshiva became a major center attracting many outstanding students, especially from Satmar and other strict Hasidic groups.

His extensive Torah teachings were published posthumously in the "Parashat Mordechai" series on Talmudic tractates including Bava Metzia and Bava Batra, edited by his son Rabbi Yehuda Cohen Beck and supported by his son-in-law Rabbi Shmuel Birnbaum. Rabbi Beck leaves behind a blessed legacy of children, grandchildren, and devoted Torah scholars who continue his path. Funeral arrangements in Monsey will be updated by the "Bachadrei Charedim" news site. The entire Jewish community mourns the loss of this great luminary.
