Shas Leader Aryeh Deri Defends Arrest Law and Coalition Stability Amid Opposition Challenges
Aryeh Deri, chairman of the Shas party, strongly criticized the opposition on Tuesday following petitions filed to the Israeli Supreme Court against the recently approved arrest law. He asserted that despite attempts to undermine the law and destabilize the coalition, the right-wing bloc will remain united. In a statement after the Knesset's approval of the law, Deri accused the opposition, led by Yesh Atid, of refusing to accept the parliamentary decision and instead turning to the Supreme Court to overturn legislation aimed at preventing national division.
Deri claimed the opposition, in collaboration with the judicial system, seeks to dismantle the right-wing bloc even at the cost of chaos. He emphasized that the legal battle against the law is not only about annulling it but also about shaking the stability of the national camp. Calling for unity, Deri sharply criticized opponents of the law, stating that the Israeli public desires consensus and unity, while the opposition chooses division and destruction. He vowed that they will not allow the nation to be split.
These remarks come amid several petitions submitted to the Supreme Court by Yesh Atid, Yisrael Beiteinu, and the Movement for Quality Government, seeking to cancel the arrest law and obtain an interim injunction to prevent its enforcement. Meanwhile, coalition members continue to defend the law, arguing it is necessary to regulate the issue and prevent further escalation of the political crisis surrounding the conscription of yeshiva students.
