Religious Zionist MK Moshe Solomon Urges Coalition Rebellion Against Yeshiva Student Detention Freeze Bill

Moshe Solomon, a member of the Knesset from the Religious Zionist Party, has called on his coalition colleagues to vote against the bill freezing the detention of yeshiva students. This follows his earlier opposition to the Basic Law on Torah Study, which led to his removal from all Knesset committees. Solomon emphasized that his intention is not to topple the bill but to amend it, citing deep concerns about its implications for society and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Speaking from the Knesset podium, Solomon reiterated his opposition to the bill in its current form and lamented that his proposed amendments during committee discussions were rejected despite their significance. He urged fellow lawmakers to exercise personal responsibility and consider voting for constructive amendments to improve the legislation, stressing that each member will have to explain their vote to the public beyond party lines.

The bill in question defines yeshiva students as those engaged in regular Torah study for at least 45 hours weekly, with the Defense Minister authorized to determine the list of recognized yeshivas. The legislation aims to freeze the detention of these students, a contentious issue amid debates over military service exemptions.

Solomon’s dissent has caused friction within the Religious Zionist Party, which had previously agreed to support the Basic Law on Torah Study after securing the removal of a clause equating Torah study with military service. The party leadership condemned Solomon’s unilateral opposition, accusing him of breaching party trust by not informing them beforehand. Following his vote against the law, Solomon was expelled from all Knesset committees.

Despite the disciplinary measures, Solomon affirmed his loyalty to the party and his commitment to representing his constituents’ values. He expressed his moral objection to legislation that, in his view, undermines the integration of Torah study and military service, especially considering the sacrifices of bereaved families from his community. Solomon accepted the party’s decision but hopes to influence its stance in the future.
