Israeli Supermarket Chains Raise Online Delivery Fees by 20% to 35.9 Shekels
Online grocery delivery fees have increased by 20% across all major supermarket chains in Israel. Carrefour, owned by Electra Consumer Products, recently raised its delivery charge from 29.9 shekels to 35.9 shekels, joining competitors who implemented similar hikes in recent weeks. Rami Levy led this trend in May by increasing delivery fees from 29.9 to 35.9 shekels, citing rising operational costs including fuel and labor. Despite the increase, Levy stated the company still subsidizes about 25% of the delivery cost.
Following Levy, other chains such as Victory, Mahsanei HaShuk, and Shufersal also raised their delivery fees to 35.9 shekels. Shufersal had previously eliminated a reduced delivery fee benefit of 10 shekels for orders over 750 shekels two years ago. Meanwhile, the online delivery platform Wolt lowered its monthly subscription fee for Wolt Plus from 49 to 29 shekels, a promotion that started in March and remains active. This subscription allows customers to order from multiple supermarket chains without paying delivery fees, though minimum orders of 140 shekels apply.
However, product prices on Wolt tend to be higher than in physical stores because they are based on convenience store branches like Shufersal Express and neighborhood Rami Levy outlets, which have higher prices than discount branches. The delivery fee increases by supermarket chains are supported by rising costs charged by delivery contractors, which can reach about 40 shekels per delivery within cities. Previously, supermarkets subsidized part of these costs to boost online sales but have now decided to reduce their subsidies.
This shift reflects broader changes in the Israeli grocery market as online shopping grows and operational expenses rise, impacting consumer costs for home delivery services.
