Israeli Actor Eran Ben Ze'ev Battles Life-Threatening Tick-Borne Illness and Leg Amputation
Eran Ben Ze'ev, known as Avrum from the Israeli children's series "Kofiko," faced a life-altering health crisis after a tick bite led to a rare and severe illness called Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Initially mistaking his symptoms for the flu, Ben Ze'ev rapidly deteriorated, suffering organ failure and falling into a coma for three and a half weeks. Despite doctors giving him minimal chances of survival, he endured 11 surgeries and was hospitalized for over a year.
The infection caused extensive tissue damage, ultimately resulting in the amputation of his left leg below the knee. Ben Ze'ev described the emotional and physical challenges of losing his leg, recalling the support from his family, especially his wife Avivush and their daughters, who helped him cope. A renowned plastic surgeon who treated him also inspired hope by sharing his own experience with a prosthesis.
Throughout his recovery, Ben Ze'ev used humor and the encouragement of loved ones to persevere. He re-learned to drive using a mobility scooter and remains active, planning trips such as an upcoming vacation to Sinai. He has transformed his ordeal into a theatrical lecture titled "Tick with a Wink," blending humor and heartfelt storytelling to share his journey and inspire others.
Born in Tel Aviv into a family of artists, Ben Ze'ev had a long career in theater, film, and television, including his iconic role in "Kofiko." Despite the drastic change in his life, he continues to engage with audiences and finds joy in everyday moments. He emphasizes the importance of resilience and making the best out of difficult situations, urging people to "turn lemons into limoncello."
