Derek Fisher, a former Los Angeles Lakers player, defended LeBron James following the star's departure from the team, criticizing what he described as exaggerated celebrations by some Lakers fans. Fisher emphasized that James' contributions over eight seasons were significant, noting that LeBron revitalized the franchise after six consecutive playoff absences and led them to an NBA championship in 2020 and the Western Conference Finals in 2023. Fisher stated, "I don't know what he was supposed to achieve that he didn't," highlighting James' role in maintaining the Lakers' relevance and brand strength.

Fisher also addressed the differing fan perceptions of James compared to Lakers legends Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson, attributing this to the fact that LeBron did not start his career with the Lakers. He argued that such comparisons are unfair given the different career trajectories and the state of the team when James joined in 2018.
